When looking for that perfect addition to your family, remember to first consider the many wonderful animals waiting at your county shelter. View adoptable pets here. Our pets are also listed on Petfinder.com.

A special thanks to Vonnie Mikkelson for providing some of the pictures and the heartwarming stories featured on Dog Daze, a periodic e-bulletin to get the word out about adoptable dogs at the shelter and to encourage volunteers to come help out. Mr. Kitty & Chelsea Mr. Kitty

I have been volunteering at the PCAS every Monday for almost the entire summer. Mr. Kitty came to us at the beginning of May, and had been there until July when I decided to adpot him. I have no idea why no one wanted him when he is the sweetest cat I've ever had! He's so handsome, too! Mr. Kitty is a real lap cat, lounging on me every time I sit to do work at my computer. He loves to go to sleep with me and wakes me up by purring on my chest every morning. It's wonderful to see him first thing every day :] His forever home is with me now!

Molly Molly

My wife and I had been considering a dog for some time and after many conversations we decided to take a drive to the Central Pasco Animal Shelter. We have never adopted a pet before, but wanted to see what was there. We could have taken them all if we had the room, but decided on a Shepherd mix who we named Molly.

What a great choice she has been! She fit right into our home and has become the spoiled little friend we had talked about all those months.

I would recommend the shelter to anyone who is thinking about a pet. There are animals who just need a good home and someone to love them, and the service at the shelter was great! They are very knowledgeable, courteous and take very good care of the animals there.

Thanks again for Molly, we’re very happy we have her!

Sincerely,
Jay & Jennifer Ohmannn

Katie Katie

Katie is a Rottweiler mix I adopted in January of 2007 from the shelter on Lake Patience Road as a 9 week old puppy. She was already close to 16 pounds. She had a heart murmur and kennel cough. The kennel cough cleared up after coming home with me but she unfortunately has not grown out of her heart murmur. She didn't like being left alone while I was at work and became destructive. I tried a number of things, including day care, and she became fine on her own. She loves life and is the sweetest dog, full of energy and always ready for a game of frisbee, her favorite. I hope her story inspires someone who is considering surrendering their dog because of behavioral issues to perservere and have patience. You will be richly rewarded; I know I have been.

Snoopy Snoopy

"We had to put our last dog to sleep 2 years ago. Since then, we have been doing a lot of traveling and decided we would wait until we were finished traveling before getting another dog. My husband died on March 29, 2009. Since his death, I have been extremely sad and lonely and really felt like I needed something around my big empty house besides me, so I started looking on-line for a dog. I really wanted to adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue. I visited the Pasco County Shelter on a Saturday and saw Snoopy. Since I have been so unsure about everything in my life since my husband died, I wasn't sure about Snoopy so I didn't take him home but I thought about him everyday after I saw him. When I checked on-line again on Monday his picture was gone and I thought that he was adopted. I checked the site everyday and on Thursday there was Snoopy's picture again. Thursday night I went to Pet Smart and bought everything I thought I would need to bring Snoopy home on Friday. I went to the Shelter directly from work on Friday, May 8th and brought Snoopy home. Snoopy has been so good. He is playful and loving. He has not had any accidents in the house and I have not crated him while at work all day. When I asked the Shelter why his picture was removed from the site, they said that he was adopted and brought back. The people who returned him said that their daughter was allergic. In my eyes, Snoopy was meant to be my dog and I am so happy to have him as my little buddy. The Vets guess that he is a Schnauzer-Poodle mix and approximately 3 yrs old." - Linda

Cocoa Cocoa

On April 29,2009,we were very fortunate to find our new dog at the Humane Sociey. For 43 years my husband and I have always had more than one dog. In the past year we buried a 14 year old and the beginning of April, a 15 year old. That left a very lonely 5 year old mini-dachshund.

We knew we had to find her a new friend so we adopted her a girl friend. When we went into the puppy area there was an extremely timid 6 month old chocolate lab mix. She was so timid that the people at the shelter called her Shy-Lo. She had to be carried out to the car and then carried into our home.

Long story shortened----she is so good. Someone loved this girl and spent a lot of time with her. She sits, gives her paw, fetches and returns tennis balls beside the the fact that she is housebroken.

I hope the people that had to give her up reads this and knows the "Cocoa" is very happy with her girl friend "Rascal" and is very much loved

Thank you Humane Society

Charlie Charly

We may never know the true circumstances that put Charly's life at the hands of inconceivable cruelty. He cannot tell us. What we know is that he arrived at the shelter with multiple stab wounds to his body, and a sad, tired look in his eyes. But weeks have passed, and Charly has moved on. His spotted coat has grown back over his healed wounds and he is ready to return to a life of romps and rolls in grassy fields and human companionship. Charly's only request of us now - a family, and a lifetime of love and trust. Charly has been adopted, please see more of his story here: Charly's story

Scarlett Scarlett

The American Pit Bull Terrier was once touted the All-American Family Dog. Scarlett proudly wears that crown. She has shown a comfortable, gentle demeanor around children and a confident, playful charm befitting her southern name.We last saw Scarlett peacefully resting in her kennel after a hard training and play session of sit, stay and fetch. Surely she knows that "Tomorrow is another day"... and that her "Tara" is somewhere just around the bend. We are happy to report that Scarlett has been adopted!

Penney Penny

A penny saved is a penny earned...and this Penney is worth a million! A well-behaved adult lab mix, Penney is affectionate, active and loves people and other dogs. She's in her element in the great outdoors and expresses unreserved enthusiasm exploring the water pool and chasing tennis balls at the shelter's "Spree" exercise facility. Penney would love to spend her life with an active, loving family. We are happy to report that our Penney has been adopted!

Juno Juno

Juno is a 3-5 year old Catahoula Mix who is very loving, affectionate, very playful, intelligent and sociable. She had been adopted once but was returned within two months due to playing too rough with other pets. Since then she had been patiently waiting for a permanent home for over 3 months and was again adopted this time into a forever home.

Cinnabun Cinnabun

Cinnabun is a 2-3 year old female Floppy-Ear Rabbit. She is gentle, calm, easy going, friendly and loves to have her head scratched. To say she was released by her owners is an understatement. Cinnabun's owners arrived at PCAS and bluntly stated if she was not taken in right away then they would shoot her. She was immediately accepted by PCAS and released by the owners. Cinnabun was adopted by a forever home two weeks later.

Sweetie Sweetie

Sweetie is a female Pekingese whose age was estimated to be well over 10 years old. She is very affectionate, gentle, obedient, calm and loves to cuddle. She came to PCAS as a stray and given her age, her chance of being adopted did not look promising. However, during an adoption event she was briefly introduced on a local TV station and her popularity soared. Her new owner and forever home waited 5 hours to be the first to adopt her.

Beauty Beauty

Beauty is a 3-5 year old female Hairless Sphynx. She is inquisitive, bashful at first but opened up quickly, very affectionate and playful. Beauty came to PCAS due to the unfortunate circumstance of her owner passing away. Beauty survived for three weeks until someone learned of the owner's death and came to the aid of the surviving pets. She blossomed into a healthy, happy feline during her stay at PCAS and was shortly adopted into a forever home.

Trixie Trixie

Meet Trixie. She was adopted in 2003 from Pasco Animal Services on Lake Patience Road. She has been a wonderful addition to the Yzaguirre househould since day one and life wouldn't be the same without her. She was adopted to provide companionship to not only the humans but also to an aging Weimaraner named Indy. They have become best buds and Indy's separation anxiety disappeared now that he has a fun and loving companion. Trixie and Indy were enrolled in training and Trixie excelled and went on from puppy to basic classes. She has become an important member and when introduced to a kitten, Trixie become the new kitten's new best friend. They can be found grooming one another from time to time! Please give a second chance to a shelter pet, you never know, you may just end up with a new best friend - the Yzaguirre's did!
